Why Granola users move

Encrypted local DB. Cloud sync you didn't ask for. $168+ a seat per year.

Encrypted SQLite, locked down. Community helpers had to reverse-engineer it; then Granola changed the format and broke them.

Sync you can't turn off. Notes round-trip through Granola's backend even when you didn't opt into it.

$14/seat Business. $35/seat Enterprise. $168–$420 a seat per year, billed forever, for notes you took yourself.

One company between you and your data. If Granola pivots, raises prices, or goes away — what do you have? An encrypted blob.

Honest take

Where Granola is better.

We're not pretending. If these matter to you, stay on Granola.

Cross-platform

Mac and Windows.

Granola runs on both. Quietly is macOS-only today; a Windows port is on the roadmap.

Templates

Polished AI summaries.

Granola's pre-built templates (sales recap, 1:1, retro) are excellent out of the box. Quietly's built-in Chat summarises with your own key, or hand the transcript to any LLM you like.

Workspace

Team workspace.

Granola's Business tier has shared folders + admin. Quietly keeps notes in your own folder — no shared cloud; team licensing is available on request.

Why people switch

Where Quietly wins.

No bot

The lock-in story is gone.

Granola's local cache is encrypted; the community had to reverse-engineer it. Quietly writes plain .md with front-matter the day you install it.

Local

Nothing syncs anywhere.

Outbound traffic is limited to model downloads, update checks, and (if you opt in) Google Calendar polling — never audio or transcripts. Granola syncs notes through its own backend by default.

$49 once

The math is brutal.

Granola Business = $168/seat/year. Quietly = $49 once. Less than four months in you're ahead, forever.

MCP next

Your AI, no AI tax.

You already pay for Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus. Hand the transcript to your own model, or use Quietly's built-in Chat with the same key — no AI credits, no per-summary cap, cited to the transcript.

In-person

Transcribe any audio file.

Pick Transcribe a file… in Quietly — a .m4a from voice memos, a .wav from a field recorder, a .mp3 of a podcast. Same Markdown, same folder.

Plain Markdown

Open in anything that reads files.

VS Code, Atlas.ti, Cursor, Codex CLI, your shell. Granola encrypts; Quietly was never closed in the first place.

Migration

Switching from Granola, in 5 minutes.

01

Export from Granola. Settings → Export. Granola gives you plain text or an API dump.

02

Drop the files in your Quietly folder. iCloud / Dropbox / your repo / any folder — wherever you point Quietly.

03

That's it. Quietly indexes new ones from the moment you install. One-click import is in the works.

FAQ

Things people ask before switching.

How is Quietly different from Granola?
Both capture audio on your Mac without a bot. The difference is what happens next: Granola encrypts your notes into a local SQLite database that syncs to Granola's cloud and is gated behind a $14–$35/user/month subscription. Quietly writes plain Markdown to a folder you choose (iCloud, your repo, any folder), syncs nothing, and charges $49 once. Quietly's MCP server for Claude Desktop / Cursor / Codex is shipping next; until then, plain Markdown means your AI tools already read the notes.
Can I import my Granola notes?
Granola exports as plain text or via their API. Drop the resulting files into your Quietly notes folder and Cursor / Codex / Claude pick them up immediately. We're working on a one-click import — email support@meetquietly.com if you'd like an early build.
What about Granola's AI summaries?
Quietly's built-in Chat summarises with your own key (Anthropic or OpenAI), each answer cited to the transcript — or hand the Markdown to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or Codex yourself, no proprietary export. You keep the prompt, the model, and the output either way.
I heard Granola changed how its DB worked and broke third-party integrations.
That's correct — community tools that wrote against Granola's local SQLite had to scramble after Granola encrypted the DB and shipped a different on-device format. Plain Markdown can't break.
Does Quietly work on Windows like Granola?
Not yet — Quietly is macOS-only today (built on EventKit, Core Audio, NSStatusItem). A Windows port is on the roadmap.
