Otter alternative

Same notes, no bot, no cloud, no $17 a month.

Otter’s bot joins your call, the transcript lives in Otter’s cloud, and you pay $17/mo forever. Quietly captures the same meetings on your Mac — a transcript just as clean, as plain Markdown, nothing uploaded — for $49 once.

Why Otter customers leave

The bot in the call. The cloud after the call. The bill every month.

OtterPilot announces itself. “Otter has joined the meeting” — in front of every customer, every candidate, every legal call.

Audio + transcripts in Otter's cloud. One breach, one TOS change, one acquisition away from being a problem you have to explain.

$17/mo, forever. $204/year just to ask Otter's chatbot questions about meetings you already attended.

Locked behind their UI. Your transcripts open in Otter, and only Otter. Cursor, Codex, Claude — all blocked.

Honest take

Where Otter is still better.

We're not pretending these don't exist. If any of these are dealbreakers, stay on Otter.

Real-time

Live captions during the call.

Otter shows captions as people speak — useful for accessibility and live demos. Quietly transcribes after.

Mobile

iOS & Android apps.

Otter has full mobile recording. Quietly is macOS-only today; a phone port is on the roadmap.

CRM

Salesforce / HubSpot push.

Otter Business pushes notes into your CRM. Quietly's path is Markdown → your folder → whatever scripts you write.

Why people switch

Where Quietly wins.

No bot

The bot is the killshot.

Half of Otter's churn is “the bot embarrassed me on a sensitive call.” Quietly captures system audio with no third party in the room.

Local

Nothing in someone else's cloud.

Audio + transcript stay on your Mac. Outbound traffic is limited to model downloads, update checks, and (if you opt in) Google Calendar polling — never audio or transcripts.

$49 once

Three months in, you're ahead.

Otter Pro = $204/year. Quietly = $49 once. The version you bought is yours forever.

MCP next

Your AI reads the meetings.

An MCP server for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Codex CLI is shipping next; today the notes are plain Markdown your editor's file readers already pick up. No Otter chatbot tier required.

In-person

Hallway, customer dinner, podcast.

Open Quietly and hit ⌘R for a mic-only recording. Pick Transcribe a file… to convert any audio file. Otter assumes a meeting link.

Plain Markdown

Open in anything that reads files.

VS Code, Atlas.ti, Cursor, Codex CLI, your shell. Otter exports; Quietly never imports in the first place.

Migration

Switching from Otter, in under 10 minutes.

01

Export your Otter transcripts. Settings → Export → choose .txt or .docx.

02

Convert to Markdown. A one-line shell script (pandoc *.docx -o *.md), or paste into any Markdown editor.

03

Drop into your Quietly folder. Done. Cursor, Codex, and Claude pick them up immediately.

FAQ

Things people ask before switching.

Is Quietly really an Otter alternative if there's no bot?
Yes — that's the point. Quietly captures the same Zoom / Meet / Teams audio Otter does, just from the Mac itself (macOS-native system audio capture via Core Audio Process Tap / ScreenCaptureKit) instead of an OtterPilot bot in the meeting. Transcript quality is comparable — Whisper plus an on-device LLM cleanup pass gets you a clean transcript without the cloud; the privacy model is not.
Does Quietly do real-time captions like Otter?
Not yet — transcription runs at the end of a meeting, locally with Whisper large-v3. Real-time on-device captioning is on the roadmap. If real-time captions are a hard requirement, Otter still wins there.
What about Otter's chatbot and action items?
Quietly's built-in Chat answers questions and pulls action items with your own key (Anthropic or OpenAI), each answer cited to the transcript — no per-meeting AI cap, no credits. Prefer another tool? Point Claude / ChatGPT / Cursor / Codex at the Markdown yourself.
Can my team replace Otter Business?
Each person buys a Personal license ($49, 2 Macs) and notes stay on their Mac — there's no shared cloud workspace today. Buying for the whole team? Email support@meetquietly.com about multi-seat licensing. If your team needs centralised admin or SSO, Quietly isn't the right fit yet.
I have years of Otter transcripts. Can I bring them in?
Otter exports as .txt, .docx, or .srt. Convert to Markdown (or just rename to .md) and drop into your Quietly folder. Cursor, Codex, and Claude pick them up the same way they pick up new notes.
